Every year, since 1950, World Meteorology Day is celebrated on March 23, commemorating the entry into force of the Convention that created the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It is well known that Cuba has the most developed meteorological service. of the Caribbean, for being the pioneer of meteorology in this entire geographical area.

There are dozens of observatories in the country, and as for the radar system, which only had one before the triumph of the Revolution, today there are a total of seven, covering hundreds and hundreds of kilometers of the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and the North of our archipelago. Likewise, there are dozens of stations that the nation has, one of them located in our municipality of Calixto García, exactly in the neighborhood of La Jíquima.

This observatory, inaugurated on February 25, 1968, has seven workers, four meteorological observers, a main observer, the expert in agro meteorology and the Head of the Station.

The young meteorology specialist Yanela Sánchez Paneque

The young specialist Yanela Sánchez Paneque was on duty the day of our visit. After the brief introductory dialogue, she very graciously told us about her social mission.

In this important center, the presence of an observer is permanent because every three hours a report has to be sent to the provincial management on the different variables, meaning precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, evaporation, radiation, pressure, direction and speed of the wind. , among other.

A meteorological station must be located in a site that is representative of the surrounding area, in a more or less extensive area with a clear location and similar terrestrial substrate, including vegetation cover, which is why the aforementioned observatory was located in this area of northeastern Calixteño geography. From there they are faithful watchers of parameters so important for the economic and social life of the region. For those who made the first records 56 years ago, for those who continued them and for those who today have that privilege, the most sincere congratulations for their Day.
