Alaín García Acosta is a teenager from the town of Buenaventura who has earned the appreciation of the workers of Communal Services in the Holguin municipality of Calixto García.
Osmani Peña, director of the entity, explains that the inclusion of the boy in Communal Services has been possible due to the establishment of an agreement between the ministries of education and labor to contribute to his vocational training as a student of the special school “José Mercerón.”
“He has responded very well, he is linked to the ornamental plant garden, he has godfathers at his side who collaborate with his training, we are not worried about his behavior, on the contrary, he shows that he is on the right path,” says Diógenes García Coba, who is the head of the Department of Green Areas.
Excited, Alaín treasures the gratitude for sharing with such hard-working workers as those of Communal Services, “they treat me like a spoiled child, I have a friendship like family with Diógenes, Michel and with Osmani the director. We have flowers in the garden and we take advantage of it to grow tomatoes and we already get some to sell to my colleagues, I like that a lot, ask and see, I am preparing to work here when I turn 18,” he tells me and nods.
The Communal Services collective is made up of more than a hundred workers, distributed in two areas located in Mir and Buenaventura and the area of San Agustín de Aguarás. In the recent 2024 balance sheet, information was provided on the steps being taken to transform the entity and turn it into a company in the not-so-immediate future, “but for this, efficiency, profitability, a culture of detail, and promoting in the collective a heightened knowledge of the economy, and quality in the provision of services, are essential.”
“However, for the present we have challenges: completing the staff, improving street sweeping, attention to people, low salaries, transforming the current state of the municipal landfill, all that and more in the midst of a complex situation that we face with less budget than last year.”
Julio César Chacón, deputy mayor who handles the construction programs, believes that despite the inconveniences, including low salaries, the group is capable of successfully carrying out its social objective, which is to provide a better service to the people.”
Before I leave, Alaín approaches me and almost whispers, “my friends and my family are them; when I turn 18, I will be there.”
