In the municipality of Calixto García, conditions are being guaranteed to protect the population, provide food, and shelter for those who need these services in the face of the threat of Tropical Storm Melissa. This was reported at the Municipal Defense Council meeting, presided over by Leonardo Batista Pupo and led by Maily Ramírez García, First Secretary of the Party and President of the Government, respectively.
The cyclone alert phase was declared at 3:00 p.m. this Saturday. Earlier that morning, an Agricultural Fair was held, attended by eleven production units, self-employed workers, and individual producers with various products. This provided a good opportunity to acquire food and other essential items during this cyclone alert.
Actions are being taken to improve and clean roads, drainage ditches, and culverts. At the same time, residents are urged to maintain the cleanliness, as it was stated that once the work is completed, a lack of discipline will return and undo the effort.
The health group announced the actions being taken to guarantee medical and nursing care, especially in the evacuation centers: the ESBU (Secondary School), the Semi-Boarding School, the Pioneer Camp, the Rafael Cruz Mixed Center (Calixto Cuatro), José Mercerón, Bartolomé Masó, and the Vista Hermosa community, which still needs to be certified, as does the San Agustín de Aguarás Basic Secondary School.
Water supply is being ensured for the local councils and institutions serving as evacuation camps.
The situation of the dams and micro-dams requires the protection of downstream residents from torrential rains. Urgent certification of the La Alegría neighborhood dam is being demanded. Communications in Mir Buenaventura are being ensured through landline telephone service.
Finally, the Defense Council reiterated the importance of continuing to take protective measures for people and property, especially in a predominantly rural area, given the imminent threat. Therefore, it is crucial to protect oneself from the rains and strong winds of Hurricane Melissa, with winds of 120 kilometers per hour.
