In response to the growing threat of Tropical Storm Melissa, the Defense Council was activated in the Holguín province territory of Calixto García. As one of the management groups within this team, the Food and Supply subgroup has been working since its activation with the specific purpose of preserving essential resources.

The mission of supplying the evacuation centers designated by the Defense Council with the necessary supplies and resources to feed all those who may need to be evacuated is paramount. This measure is part of a series of necessary actions in this informational phase, Yanet Cabana, head of the Food and Supply subgroup at the Calixto García Defense Council, assured us.

The clarification provided by the head of the Food subgroup regarding the coordination with the various production entities within the agricultural sector is important. In this way, the sale of food and various agricultural products will be arranged in the designated areas, including the central plaza, with the dual objective of preserving the produce and benefiting the community. This sale will continue as long as weather conditions permit, the director specified.

Furthermore, she assured that the established mechanisms for preserving human life and tangible economic resources are activated in the different areas of the municipality, protecting them from heavy rains and strong gusts of wind. She then explained that thanks to these mechanisms, the subgroup already knows the number of potential evacuees in the territory—necessary and vital information.

As part of these actions, bread and shortbread will be available at the various bakeries in the area. This information was obtained firsthand by the director of the subgroup of the Municipal Defense Council. Yanet Cabana also clarified that the production of shortbread and specialty bread will take place at various production centers scattered throughout the community councils, depending on the availability of electricity, as not all of these facilities have wood-fired ovens.

Work is proceeding constantly to ensure there is no loss of life or material resources. Yanet Cabana, head of the Food and Supplies subgroup, concluded her interview by urging all residents of Calixto García to stay informed through official channels and to follow the Civil Defense measures for each phase of this hydrometeorological event.
