Aliena González Pérez is a pregnant woman from Calixta who, like many others, receives care to achieve her long-awaited dream of being a mother.

As part of the medical follow-up, she is admitted to the obstetrics ward of the Nicodemus Regalado León Hospital in the Holguín municipality of Calixto García, where she celebrates the news that this municipality closed 2023 with zero infant and maternal mortality rates, an achievement that allowed that the province of Holguín, according to preliminary data, will reach 4.7 per thousand live births.

And although her shyness gets in the way of this reporter's questions, she assures with a firm look and precise words her gratitude to those who, without barely knowing her, overflow with love and dedication in a profession that is all humanism and solidarity. “Very happy and grateful in my case I am full term and as I live in the rural neighborhood of La Torcaza, belonging to the Popular Council of Vista Hermosa, I am here to avoid any setbacks with my first-born.”

Along with her, the experienced gynecological nurse, Esperanza Garrido Pérez, assures that success lies in the follow-up from when the pregnancy is confirmed. “It is a result of many, not only of the professionals in the Public Health sector who take on the greatest challenge, behind these indicators there are plenty of examples of love and generosity with the help of political organizations and organizations that ensure the right from the community to life, to happiness.”

According to preliminary statistics, more than 550 infants were born in 2023 and more than 40 are underweight for an index of 7.4, which will require new ways of doing things in the prevention and control of issues that, such as teenage pregnancy, have repercussions. in the rise of this last indicator.

And while at the same time this result is celebrated with joy, primary care professionals, one of the essential links for the implementation of the Maternal and Child Program (PAMI), arrive today at their 40th anniversary with the certainty of being guarantors from the neighborhood of well-being of the people.

This is stated by the renowned nurse Elena Sánchez, a Sangermanense who found the true meaning of her vocation in Calixteño lands. “It is a demanding but rewarding job at the same time, because the office runs many programs with the mission of preventing diseases and that is what we have been doing for more than 30 years.”

With this noble purpose, in the municipality of Calixto García, there are more than 50 medical offices that allow services to be brought closer to the people and that strengthen the humanist and solidarity ideas of Fidel Castro, who since 1984 promoted the implementation of institutions like these so that public health became a right for everyone in defense of life.

That is why, although the lack of resources limits, the will and innovative thinking are forged to look for alternatives and offer special follow-up to the Maternal and Child Program, so that pregnant women like Aliena González show happiness and enjoy their pregnancy process.
