Taking care of our language, respecting it and making good use of it is not a question of concept, it is about preserving our cultural identity and feeling the pride that distinguishes us before the world as genuine Cubans.

And this is a matter said and discussed so many times, because there are many occasions where spelling errors that abound in the writing of any document come to light, even in very serious pages and articles, which say a lot about the lack of knowledge of the mother tongue, or carelessness when expressing what is desired.

Currently there is enormous dissatisfaction with how Spanish is being used. Many think that writing well depends on knowing the spelling rules, but spelling is not learned by studying the rules alone, although it must be recognized that this is a skill that is achieved through of systematic practice. But we cannot forget that reading also plays a fundamental role in this, therefore I summarize it in two basic skills: reading and writing.

However, this is not enough; It is necessary that when you read or write you observe well, you reflect on the writing of those words, and above all, you review what you do, something that is not commonly done, and I am not just referring to the students, here I include everyone because we all communicate orally or in writing, that distinguishes us as human beings.

Let us not forget that spelling errors dent the elegance of the Spanish language, full of beautiful expressions and words that show its indisputable richness. There is also no doubt that Spanish is one of the most important languages in the world. And in the world there are currently almost 500 million people who speak it as their mother tongue and many others who are learning it or who speak it as a second language.

Almost 5% of the multilingual pages on the Internet already use Spanish, therefore the number of people who access them is greater. As a curious fact, I tell you that Spanish is currently the second most spoken language on Facebook, only surpassed by English, and the third most used on Twitter, only behind Japanese and English. However, it ranks second in the latter in English-speaking cities such as London and New York.

So there are plenty of reasons to write with greater spelling correction. Remember that it is a privilege to have one of the most universal languages of humanity as a language, but that places us in a great commitment that we must assume fully aware of its significance, therefore the greater the responsibility to care for and preserve it.

Spanish language day

Language Day is celebrated on April 23 to pay tribute to the quintessential exponent of Spanish, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of “El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha”, an illustrious work of the Spanish language. The writer died on April 22, 1616, in Madrid-Spain, however, the date of his burial, April 23, was decreed as the day of his death by a custom of the time. It should be noted that William Shakespeare died on that same date, which is why English Language Day is also celebrated on April 23.

Spanish Language Day at the UN is celebrated on April 23. This day highlights the importance of Spanish as an official language and seeks to raise awareness about its culture and history. The choice of this date reflects the coincidence of Cervantes' death with that of Shakespeare, highlighting the cultural connection between the Spanish and English languages.
