Sandra Gómez González is a fifth-year student of Social Communication at the Calixto García University Center. Like the rest of her group, she has been working for several years on research projects that will allow them to earn their degrees.

But Sandra has a topic that she is passionate about and defends with great fervor. “I’m working on a promotional campaign to foster love and respect for our local culture, using the music of the Hermanos Ajo Oriental Organ, which holds the status of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Cuban nation.”

[Sandra Gómez González, a fifth-year student of Social Communication at the Calixto García University Center, defends the tradition of organ music] Sandra Gómez González, a fifth-year student of Social Communication at the Calixto García University Center, defends the tradition of organ music.

For the implementation of the promotional campaign that fosters respect and admiration for the Hermanos Ajo Oriental Organ in our municipality, she has chosen a very special population, as the young Sandra Gómez affirmed: “I am implementing the campaign primarily with the young population, specifically with students from the Armando Valle López pre-university school.”

She specifies: “There, I have conducted interviews and surveys, we have held talks with local cultural specialists, they have participated in activities where they have played the organ, and a transformation is already noticeable in many young people, an interest in learning more about this instrument and a respect for the tradition.”

The declaration of the eastern organ as a national heritage of Cuba confirms the contribution of this musical instrument to the national culture, with roots firmly planted in this region. Therefore, learning about it and ensuring that new generations keep the tradition alive also means defending what identifies us as residents of Calixto García.
