Upon the triumph of January 1, 1959, thousands of young people joined the insurrectional struggle from the mountains and the plains, and were the protagonists of the tasks that marked the social and political transformation in process as part of the transformations sponsored by the Revolution.
At the triumph of the Revolution, Roberto Díaz Torres was just a child, but he soon matured and was already beginning to understand the need to join Fidel and the Revolution, which is why the first path that aligned him with the new social project was his incorporation into the ranks of the National Revolutionary Militias from a battalion created in Buenaventura.
“From the ranks of this battalion that was located in La Mananina, present-day Villa Magalis, here very close to Buenaventura, a group of militiamen marched towards El Escambray as part of the fight against bandits. I was still a short teenager, which made me being a child and they didn't select me for that mission,” says Roberto Díaz Torres, about this first stage of his incorporation into the defense of the Revolution.
And he continues saying "As soon as I entered the 1970s, I was summoned by the General Military Service and after completing the initial preparation in the midst of complex events, Commander Zayas assigned me to the Tacajó power plant where I had to fulfill tasks to protect the economy, since that at that time the enemy was trying to prevent the success of the 1970 harvest, carrying out sabotage. In these events, a driver and a van were assigned to me to tour all the places that could be sensitive to sabotage. I remember when, while completing a tour of the water pipe that supplied the plant, I surprised an individual who was traveling in a tractor At the moment when he was crossing over the aluminum pipe, when the passage was over an iron pipe, we immediately stopped him and took him to Báguanos, where he was handed over to the Head of the National Revolutionary Police post.
Three years passed in these operations to defend this economic objective until Commander Alfredo Zayas, who at that time was the First Secretary of the Party in the province of Oriente, considered the mission accomplished, and told him, after two months on vacation, join again to fulfill other tasks.
“The indicated time elapsed, I went back to Zayas, who told me that he would go on new missions, and offered me an envelope to deliver to Celia Sánchez in Havana, I had never traveled to the capital of the country, I only knew to Ciego de Ávila, but hey, I started the trip and when I got to the terminal, I immediately asked where the Council of State was, and someone told me- take that direction towards Latinoamericano, I walked several blocks and asked again, I They indicated to go back to where there was a tall tower and a wide square, I got there, the first contact was with the guard, elegantly dressed, who ordered me to stop, I presented the letter and they told me to see Celia, until I met her I went after going through four posts from the heroine's personal guard”.
And Roberto Díaz from Calixteño continues narrating “With the kindness that characterized him, he assigned me a transport that took me to El Cotorro where I was treated, it is true that the new task consisted of being part of the protection battalion of the highest leadership of the country, There I personally met Fidel, who came down to talk to us in the morning, talked to us about the situation of the countries and peoples of Latin America with details such as the number of heads of cattle that were in Argentina at that time. He spent hours talking about the projects of the Revolution, the development of the sugar industry, agricultural production and tourism. He talked to us about various topics and issues. His figure commanded respect for his intelligence, I have no doubt that Fidel has been Martí's best student due to his intelligence and capacity, I will never be able to forget him, nor will humanity be able to forget him”.
From his eyes a tear can be seen that turns into crying…. "Fidel should not have died, he is greatly missed by Cuba and the world, his death caused me great sadness, I remember the day the funeral caravan passed through here with the remains of the Commander in Chief, that day I also cried with sadness, and it is that I remember him every so often and it comes back to me when he talked to me several times, when I was a member of the protection squad of the Council of State”
