Population aging in Cuba is progressively increasing as a current and future phenomenon of significant connotation; causes are associated with an increase in life expectancy, along with declining mortality and declining fertility, among other factors.
For this reason, strategies are needed to increase the birth rate and improve the conditions and quality of life of the elders, the need of differentiated attention, systematic and quality care of the morbidity profile, characteristic of this fragile and vulnerable population group.
An example worthy of recognition for the attention and care of this population sector in our municipality of Calixto García is the home of the elderly “José Miró Argenter”, located in the Las Brisas neighbourhood, in Buenaventura.
Dr. Wilfredo González Ricardo, head of this institution, proudly refers to the noble action of watching over the lives of these "eternal young people": “The whole team of nurses, doctors and service personnel, we do our best efforts to offer the elders a pleasant stay and being happy in their last years of life".
The protagonists of this story are members of the “club of the hundred and twenty years”, the desires to live are patent in Oscar Rodríguez Ramírez and Antonio Bertot Rodríguez, both represent the well-being and satisfaction they receive in the home of the grandparents of Buenaventura: "The Attention is excellent, I feel good, strong"says Oscar. Bertot says: "I carry water, I help in the kitchen, here I should not do anything, but that is my will because I can still be useful."
Honors to whom honor is due, recognition to doctors, nurses, social workers and support staff who are responsible for food, provisioning and cleaning, anonymous heroes that give more life to the years of our grandparents, aware that someday will be us who will need those pampering and kissing that is much needed when the whole hair is white.
