Arais Santiesteban Torres is a young teacher at Leonor Pérez Cabrera Elementary School, in the district of Jagüeyes, municipality of Calixto García in Holguin. For her, to work in a center that bears that name, is an honor: "Because she is the mother of our Martí, the very loving one who raised a son who offered his precious life for the independence of our country. It was the one who transmitted values, together with her husband Mariano, to this large family of seven females and one single male, "she says.
"I teach first grade, difficult because it is the initial of the primary, but little by little I instruct them and at the same time I contribute to their education. In this course, on the verge of culminating, the results are flattering. I see better preparation of my students, even in their discipline because we do not do anything if when they leave school they are disobedient, do not respect the elderly and do not collaborate with household chores, "he explains.
The "Leonor Pérez Cabrera" is part of the primary education unit that bears the same name. It has an enrollment of 103 students, including students located in classrooms in the neighborhoods of Zorral and Las Barías.
An experienced teacher is Juan Almenares Suárez who shares the fifth and sixth grades: "It is a multi-layered classroom, the work is complex, but my experience of almost 40 years allows me to get ahead in this pedagogical assignment. Look, journalist, at the same time that we impart knowledge, we also link girls and boys to the Martí forest so they can get to know the trees that Martí rightly describes in his newspaper from Cap-Haitien to Dos Ríos. For us it is an honor to work in the school that bears the name of a woman like Doña Leonor Pérez Cabrera, and for that reason it is also a commitment to the Homeland. "
