The well-being of adults reaching the elderly is one of the priorities of the Cuban health system. That is why a new project dedicated to raising the quality of life of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment will operate in the province of Holguin as part of a national program dedicated to the care of the sector.
This strategy of intervention will combine therapeutic techniques with technological advances, to guarantee the autonomy of the elderly with this disease, according to ACN Sandra Guris, defectologist and specialist of the Provincial Public Health Directorate.
She indicated that the initiative will start with nursing homes and grandparent homes in the municipalities of Gibara, Mayarí and the city where there are patients with these medical characteristics, mainly related to old age.
Guris emphasized that older adults can exercise through games, audiovisual projection, among other tools, which include family members.
Currently, said the specialist, details are needed for the beginning of this program, planned for this 2017, as an alternative to improve the social integration of the elderly.
This project is part of the initiatives of the Center for Research on Longevity, Aging and Health (CITED), based in Havana and will include other provinces of the country, including Santiago de Cuba.
Gradually, it is expected to generalize the results of the primary health care system, which will allow the development of prevention activities and early diagnosis of symptoms.
Mild cognitive impairment is known as incipient dementia and affects in most cases adults over 65 years of age, with symptoms such as memory loss and impaired daily activities.
