micropresa sequiaWe are in the third month of the wet season but the rains continue to be so scarce in the province of Holguín that several municipalities (Rafael Freyre, Banes, Antilla, Báguano and Urbano Noris) remain below their historical averages.

From January to date this territory exhibits a record of 503 millimeters, which is equivalent to only 87 percent of the historical average. The lowest accumulated rainfall territory is Urbano Noris with 320 millimeters.

The lack of the water resource also affects 54 sources (wells) of the aqueduct system in a total or partial way, a situation that complicates its availability for some 24,578 residents in 134 communities in the municipalities of Báguano, Calixto García, Holguín and Rafael Freyre.

As a result, some 10,667 people receive water through car-pipes and the Cauto-Güirabo, Nipe-Gibara and Colorado-Naranjo transfers are activated to ensure supply to the provincial head, the municipality of Cacocum and the Tourist Pole .

The information provided by Raúl Pérez, sub-delegate of Hydraulic Resources in Holguín, details that work is being carried out on the assurance of a induced rain within the present wet period, as well as in the deep water catchment.

The first steps are taken to introduce water desalination as a solution to supply the population, for which the terms of reference of a collaborative project were signed for the installation of a desalination plant in the town of Caletones, municipality of Gibara.
